Painting Stucco, Wood Siding, Vinyl and Brick in Modesto

Painting stucco and wood siding in Modesto: what paint sticks, hairline cracks, how often to repaint, plus vinyl, aluminum, brick and shingle questions.

Painting Stucco, Wood Siding, Vinyl and Brick in Modesto

Stucco and wood are the two walls we paint most in Modesto. Stucco covers most homes built since the 1970s. Wood lap siding, plywood siding and wood trim are on the older bungalows and many ranch houses. Vinyl, aluminum and full brick are uncommon here, but we answer those questions too.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Local labor, paint prices and the condition of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

Can you paint stucco, and what paint sticks to it?

Yes, you can paint stucco, and acrylic exterior paint sticks to it well. Stucco is rough and porous, so it grips paint. It has to be clean, dry and free of chalk first.

A flat 100% acrylic is the usual choice. An elastomeric coating is thicker and stretches over fine cracks, but it costs more and must go on a sound, dry wall. Nationally, painting stucco is published at $1.00 to $5.50 per square foot. The first coat on stucco is best sprayed and rolled in, so paint reaches the bottom of the texture.

Do hairline cracks in stucco need fixing first?

Yes. Hairline cracks should be filled before painting, or they show through and let water in. Fine cracks are filled with a flexible, paintable patching compound or bridged by an elastomeric coating.

Hairline cracks are normal in Modesto stucco. Heat makes walls expand and contract every day, and valley soils move between the wet and dry seasons. Wide cracks, cracks that keep growing and stucco that sounds hollow need a stucco repair first. Nationally, stucco repair is published at $8 to $50 per square foot.

How often does stucco need painting?

Stucco needs painting about every 5 to 7 years, by the national published figure. Some homes go longer. The wall tells you when: color fades, the surface turns chalky and hairline cracks open.

In Modesto the south and west walls age fastest. Sprinklers hitting the base of a wall leave white hard water stains and wear the paint there. Moving the sprinkler heads protects the new paint.

What paint is best on wood siding, and will paint fix dry, cracked wood?

A quality acrylic exterior paint over a proper primer is best on wood siding. Paint will not fix dry, cracked wood. It only coats it. Cracks have to be filled and bare wood primed first.

Valley sun dries wood out. Paint on south and west siding, fascia and garage trim cracks and peels first. Loose paint is scraped, grey wood sanded back, bare spots primed and open joints caulked before two finish coats. National figures put painting wood siding at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot, with paint lasting 3 to 7 years.

Can plywood or T1-11 siding be painted?

Yes. Grooved plywood siding can be painted or coated with solid stain. Many Modesto ranch and tract homes have it. It needs a careful look first, because the layers can separate at the bottom edges where water sits.

Sheets that are delaminating or soft should be replaced. Sound sheets are primed where bare, the grooves are worked in with a brush or roller, and the bottom edges are sealed.

Can you paint vinyl siding?

Yes, you can paint vinyl siding if it is in good condition. It is washed and then painted with an acrylic paint made to bond to vinyl. Nationally, the cost is published at $1 to $3 per square foot.

Vinyl siding is not common in Modesto. Where we see it, heat is the concern.

Can vinyl siding be painted a darker color, or will it warp?

A darker color can make vinyl siding warp. Dark paint absorbs more heat than the vinyl was made to take, and the panels can buckle.

This risk is higher in Modesto than in most places, with summer highs in the 90s and above and strong sun. Stay with a color no darker than the original, or use a paint line labeled vinyl-safe, which is made in colors that reflect more heat.

Does painting vinyl siding void the warranty?

It can. Some vinyl siding makers state that painting voids the warranty, and others allow it with conditions. The answer is in the warranty document for your siding.

Read it or call the maker before painting. If the siding is old enough that the warranty has ended, the question no longer matters.

Can you paint aluminum siding?

Yes. Aluminum siding takes paint well once the chalky old finish is washed off. Bare metal spots are primed, and an acrylic exterior paint goes on top.

Nationally, it is published at $1 to $4 per square foot, with paint lasting 5 to 10 years. Aluminum siding is rare on Modesto homes. Metal garage doors and metal trim are painted the same way.

Is painting brick a bad idea, and does it trap moisture?

Painting brick can trap moisture if the wrong paint is used or the brick is already damp. Brick lets water vapor pass. A heavy, non-breathing paint film holds moisture in, and the paint then blisters and peels.

Modesto's dry climate makes this less of a problem than in wet regions, but it still applies near sprinklers and at ground level. Breathable masonry paint, limewash or a mineral coating is the safer choice.

Should I paint my brick or leave it natural?

Leave it natural if you like it and it is in good shape. Paint your brick if it is stained, mismatched or simply dated. Know that paint on brick is very hard to remove later, so it is close to a permanent choice.

Most brick in Modesto is a trim band or a planter on the front of a ranch house, not a whole wall. Nationally, painting brick is published at $1.50 to $4.50 per square foot, and limewash at $1.50 to $5.00.

How much does it cost to paint a cedar shingle house?

No national figure is published for a cedar shingle house alone. The published range for wood siding is $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot, and shingles sit toward the upper part of any wood range because they soak up more product and take more brush work.

Shingle-sided houses are rare in Modesto. Where there are shingles on a gable or an older bungalow, they are usually stained, not painted. We price them after a look.

Why does paint fail first on the south and west sides?

Paint fails first on the south and west sides because they take the most sun. Ultraviolet light breaks down the paint's binder, the color fades and the surface turns to chalk. Heat then cracks the film as the wall expands and shrinks each day.

That is why one side of a Modesto house can look ready for paint while the north side still looks fine. A partial repaint of the sunny sides is sometimes a sensible choice.

Three rooms were done in an excellent way. One area was painted pine paneling and cabinets. It is beautiful! Patching was done where necessary. There was a color change that looks so good. All painted woodwork turned out perfectly.
